Matawan dropped the opening round of the North 2 group 3 playoff falling to Millburn 4-1. Tim Egan threw 6 innings with one earned run and Luke Elliott had 3 hits in the loss. Matawan takes on Manalapan Friday in the round of 16 in the MCT.
In the first round of the Monmouth County Tournament- the Huskies topped the Holmdel Hornets 2-1. It was the battle of the aces with Tim Egan facing Jake Umans from Holmdel. Both pitchers started the game throwing 5 scoreless innings.
But Matawan scored first in the bottom of the 6th. Aidan Holeman led off with a bunt single followed by Luke Elliott reaching on a fielders choice. After a passed ball, Mike Caldon delivered a run scoring single followed by a sac fly RBI by Jake Brigandi.
That was all Tim Egan needed. Holmdel scratched across one in the bottom of the seventh on a rbi single by Vallilo. Egan shut the door getting the next batter to fly out to center to seal the victory for Matawan who played errorless ball through 7 with first baseman Rob Cortapassi making several inning saving picks on the throws at first.
Senior Tim Egan pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and roped a bases-clearing triple for one of his two hits as the Huskies handled the Green Wave. Senior Mike Caldon also drove in three, including an inside-the-park home run. All of the seniors did their part to make this must win game a success
