Sophomore Adam Elliot pitched a five-hitter and the Huskies scored three times over the final two innings to top the Chargers and advance to the sectional semifinals against the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 7 Manchester and No. 2 Robbinsville. According to Matawan coach Bobby Carnovsky, this is Matawan’s first trip to a sectional semifinal since 1993.

Elliot allowed one unearned run while walking one and striking out eight to improve to 6-3. Matawan struck first on a 2 out rbi double Justin Henderson. After Spotswood tied the game,Matawan took the lead on a two-out RBI single by Joe Piscopo in the top of the sixth that plated courtesy runner Makel Caldwell, who scored two runs while running for catcher Cory Nusbaum.

Nusbaum also plated Matawan’s fourth run with an RBI ground out in the top of the seventh, which followed an RBI single by Nick Smith. Justin Henderson gave Matawan a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth before Spotswood tied it with an RBI single by Ryan Walker in the bottom of the inning.

Matawan wins ROUND 1 over Delran

Mike Creamer came on to record one out to strand the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on first in the top of the seventh and the Huskies held on to beat the Bears and advance to the sectional quarterfinals on Thursday against No. 3 Spotswood. Nick Santuccio worked the first 6 2/3 innings and scattered eight hits to earn the win.

 

Joe Piscopo had two hits and hit a long triple that turned into a run when the junior outfielder raced home on a mishandled relay, giving Matawan a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Piscopo also singled in the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI double by Creamer that opened the scoring. Senior catcher Cory Nusbaum tacked on a second run with an RBI single that chased home Creamer.

 

Luke Adduchio, Billy Rodriguez and Justin Henderson all had 2 hits each for Matawan.

 

Delran scored a run in the top of the 7th and had 4 hits but Mike Creamer slammed the door shut by striking out the Delran clean up hitter.

Pebble Creek is an 18-hole, par 71 golf course. It’s a player friendly course complete with ladies tees. It includes three par 5 hole, four par 3 holes, and 11 par 4 holes.
